On The Road Again - Tropical Travel Expenses

Currency Conversion Site

Billy and I are traveling from Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico through the rugged south western Pacific coast of this great country and on into Guatemala, and Belize. We will be returning through the Mexican Gulf States of the Yucatan Peninsula and the State of Vera Cruz. Allowing ourselves 'only' three months to do these many miles/kilometers seems a bit rushed!

The following short journal is a presentation of our expenses on a daily basis in case you'd like to follow along.

Check back in often, as we will be updating these figures when we are able to connect to internet.

If you have any questions, feel free to write us at: TheGuide@RetireEarlyLifestyle.com

The Last Day

Today wraps up our 105-day adventure through the Mexican Pacific coast, on into the volcanic heart of Guatemala, enjoying the beach and laidback island life of Belize, and partaking in the Mayan style of living in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

During this 3 ½ month odyssey, we body surfed awesome waves dude, soaked up the sun along the robust Pacific coast of Mexico, visited world heritage colonial cities, shopped in indigenous markets and sampled their native cuisine daily. Our travel style is to use the local transportation including the brightly painted Chicken Buses of Guatemala, and the water taxis of Belize, where we cleared customs on a dock. Navigating our way down an exotic tropical river in search of Indiana Jones, we found the colorful Garifuna town of Livingston and ate the Garifuna seafood specialty, Topado.

Our hike up a volcano was way too close and personal to the lava flow for our tastes, but we balanced that experience by riding bicycles along the packed sand paths of Belize and swimming in their warm Caribbean waters. We ate enough chicken, rice and stew beans to satisfy us for quite awhile, explored mountain high coffee plantations, and visited a macadamia nut farm learning of the nut’s marvelous curative properties. We found the exact spot where Mayans claim the world began and spoke with them about their end of the world prophesy for 2012. When on a hike don't forget to bring plenty to drink. You can find water or juice bottles in most stores before you head on on your hike.

Bo Derek-style secluded beaches, confectionary sunrises, fierce sunsets and the mysterious 'zona magica' in Comala are etched in our minds. Exotic bird calls surrounded our Jungle Cabana in Playa del Carmen. There was Rasta Rap in Belize and the Hokey Pokey water taxi. We strolled along black volcanic sand beaches and watched the savage ocean waves pound in Cuyutlan, squeezed ourselves up narrow winding stairwells to the bell tower of the second oldest church in Guatemala. With all the climate variations, we roasted, toasted and froze.

Many of you have been following along, asking questions and virtually traveling with us. Thank you! We appreciated your company. If we were going further afield we’d definitely be looking to transfer money to Pakistan, India or wherever we go. It would save us carrying any cash and we could pick it up on arrival. Thankfully, this trip wasn't an expensive one!

For the entire journey our spending averaged less than $53.00 USD per day. This included lodging, meals, transportation, and country exit fees - everything we spent money on throughout this period.

Enjoying a private estate-turned hotel in Merida, Yucatan

The hotels we stayed in had pools, views and beach access, or they were centrally located in the hearts of cities within easy walking distance to the main Plaza and points of interest. Hotel wifi was available and cyber cafes were plentiful.

What we have demonstrated here in our expense log is that the price of travel doesn’t have to cost anymore than staying at home. The difference is that we have added exotic experiences to our memory banks, met unforgettable intriguing characters and have personally grown by meeting the challenges that are inherent by being on the road.

Our chosen retirement lifestyle fits us perfectly. What about you? What’s holding you back? There’s a big world awaiting your discoveries. Go for it!

***Editor's Note to Spending***

Traveling poses challenges on many levels and unexpected things happen. If being on the road was the same as being back home, why leave, right? We are now into the third month of our Mexico-Central America adventure and we’ve hit a few snags along the way.

Our reliable GPS unit stopped functioning somewhere along the Pacific coast of Mexico and cannot be fixed until I send it back to Garmin. My eye glasses needed to be repaired twice for two different issues in two separate locations. The power cord on our PC started shorting out, requiring professional attention in Tuxtla Guetierrez, Chiapas.

Other than the GPS, all of these problems were able to be resolved easily and in short order.

But it was after leaving Antigua - a major hub in Guatemala with plenty of shops and supplies - and arriving in Rio Dulce, a small “pass through” town, that our camera completely stopped working. For us, our camera is a major piece of equipment on our travels.

It was decision time.

Should we turn back and re-travel the tedious 9 hours by bus to Antigua and try to get our camera mended? This might take a week or more and consequently delay our entry into Belize by that same amount of time. We could possibly purchase a new camera while in Antigua or maybe it would be better to just continue forward with our trip from where we are here in Rio Dulce without a camera in hopes that we can find something suitable somewhere along the way.

This was not a small decision for us as all the choices had their limitations. Ultimately, we chose to move forward and take our chances.

Our trip down the Rio Dulce to the very small town of Livingston - reachable only by boat and located in the small bay of Amatique on the Caribbean Sea - went as planned and the scenery was awesome. Not having a functional camera, I was more than frustrated watching scene after photographable scene pass me by.

Arriving in the humble and historic fishing village of Livingston we again knocked around the idea of returning to Antigua. At lunch we asked our waiter if there was a shop nearby that could help us with our delemma. Low and behold here in this town of 6,000 people there was ONE camera. Looking at it I wondered how long it had been sitting on the shelf, here in the humidity and heat. Still it was an option...

The man who checked us in at our hotel suggested that we should go to the larger port city of Puerto Barrios because they would have more of a selection.

The next morning we found ourselves on the 7:30 AM water taxi for the forty minute ride to the international shipping town of Puerto Barrios. The photo shop we found offered the much larger selection of TWO cameras. We acquired our piece of equipment - not exactly what we would have chosen under different circumstances but it was better than having nothing -  relaxed a bit checking out the town, had some lunch and returned via water taxi back to Livingston.

So what’s the point to this narrative?

The point is that while traveling - and in Life - unexpected things are going to happen. In all of our years of being on the road we have never had this many equipment challenges in such a short time. Yet we solved each one as it arose - all in foreign countries and in unfamiliar surroundings. There was no Wal*Mart on the corner and we couldn't simply go online, order something and have it shipped to us while we were in transit.

While at times traveling can be frustrating, it also develops confidence in one's ability to move forward into the unknown. It is taking a leap of faith and it cultivates a sense of self-reliance, which has always been our style.
