Letra CH

Restaurant on Lake Chapala, Mexico

Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

A restaurant with a strange name (there's gotta be a story there...) Letra CH is one of the best kept secrets at Lake Chapala, Mexico.

Serving a mixture of fresh seafood and fusion cuisine, this charming place has a lake view, a full bar, and pricing comes in various ranges.

The son of a friend of ours owns this cutting edge restaurant and Billy thought we were overdue for a visit.

Located on the paved road by the lake going towards Mezcala, Avenida Pepe Guizar ends here and the restaurant is on the left about 2 doors down.

At present, there is an OXXO store, and then Letra CH.

Parking is in front.

Letra CH has seating on two floors. Here is Billy in front of the bar, looking out towards the lake. A boutique hotel is behind the restaurant.

Because the restaurant is right at the lake, sometimes it can be chilly with off lake breezes. Bring a light sweater or jacket just in case. But if you forget, the restaurant offers rebozos (shawls) to wear.

Wind screens enclose the whole second story of the restaurant, in case of inclement weather.

The restaurant is done in an ocean theme, with blue wave-like tiles at the bar, and blue and white table cloths.

Notice the beautiful inside of the Palapa roof.

From the Palapa roof of the restaurant, these airy blue pots hang almost to the side railing.

The quaint hotel is in the back on the right.

Painted in the Mexican style of bright yellow and fuchsia, this little hotel sets back from the road and the restaurant.

Grilled asparagus with Parmesan cheese, Letra CH, Chapala, Mexico

Grilled asparagus with freshly grated Parmesan cheese

We were anxious to start our meal. Both of us ordered full meals which came with appetizers. This one is of grilled asparagus with freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top.

The taste of the fire from the grill on the asparagus was superb, and the contrast of the thin ribbons of Parmesan was really delectable.

Tuna carpaccio with capers and jalapeno mayo, Letra CH, Lake Chapala, Mexico

Another outstanding appetizer, this tuna carpaccio was drizzled in lime and olive oil, with capers, fresh parsley and jalapeno mayonnaise on the side, cracked black pepper on top.

I can't tell you how good this was!

This carpaccio is also available at the 99 Peso Plate size.

Salmon with orange sauce

Billy ordered this grilled salmon with orange sauce. It came with a side salad and some vegetable chips.

This is so artistically displayed on the black slate plate!

Billy, being a trained French Chef, loves to cook. Take a look at some of his beautiful meals here.

Grilled Octopus, Letra CH, Chapala, Mexico

Grilled octopus

I realize that octopus might be an out-of-the-box choice for many of you, but we had heard that Letra CH excelled at this dish.

I had to try it.

Tender, juicy, perfectly charred on the outside, a swath of chipotle sauce finds its way underneath.

Fresh vegetables, jalapeno mayonnaise and cracked pepper.

Truly first-class.

Menu Letra CH, Chapala, Mexico

This is only a partial menu from the restaurant. They also have a delicious and varied 99 Peso Plates available. These smaller plates give you plenty to eat.

What you see above is the menu for the Platos Fuertos which include an appetizer. Prices range from $8USD to just over $12USD.

I did go on to order a lemon mousse for dessert, but... surprisingly, I was disappointed. After eating these exceptional main courses and appetizers, I expected this dessert to be light, airy, melt-in-the mouth puff clouds of lemon.

Not so.

Instead my dessert was an over gelatin-ized lemon pudding with cake interspersed.

Ah well, I'll go back and try a different dessert with a cup of coffee another time.

Our bill

This is our bill which comes to about $35USD before tip.

Certainly this is a restaurant that we recommend for a romantic lunch or dinner, a gathering of friends, or to impress any of your out of town guests.
