How to Find Affordable
Housing While Traveling
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
Hi Billy and Akaisha,
You gave me some
amazing information on my health insurance choices. Thank you so much for providing it and
responding so quickly.
I plan to retire in a few years at 55. My wife will be
50. We are both in good health.
We love international travel and plan to spend a
month or two in each place we stay to get into the local culture. We would
probably spend about 3 months (or less) in the US each year. If you have any
advice on renting in different countries for a month or two that will be
helpful. Doing a nightly rental like airbnb for months would be expensive. I
will review all the links you provided. Thank you again!
Good health and happiness to you both.

Housing options while on the road
Hi Raj!
I'm glad you thought the information that I provided was useful.
Regarding renting a place for a month or longer while traveling, yes!
We have lots of suggestions. First, I would check out our
Traveling Housing
Options Page.
We list things like
House
Sitting, which many people find satisfying. Of course,
that's not for everyone, and often it includes
tending to pets. But if you find
a location to visit and it works out, your housing costs are dramatically cut.
Many home owners want to travel themselves, or take the summer/winter off and go
elsewhere.
My understanding of AirBnB - from those who have spoken to me about it - is if you
rent an AirBnB place and you like it, then you can deal directly with the owner
and ask for a monthly discount.
Most AirBnB owners want the guaranteed income instead of 3 days here, a week
there... that is an option we have heard lots of people implement. In fact,
during the Covid shut downs, some people we know were "stuck" in Portugal at an
AirBnB. They arranged w/ the owners to rent for a year! It was no problem and
much more affordable than a hotel.
Home Sweet Home (away from home!)
That being said, depending on the country and the hotel, Billy and I often have
stayed months at a time. Generally there is a nightly rate, a weekly rate, and
then you can ask about a monthly rate.
In this way, you get maid service, clean towels and sheets, WiFi, bathroom
items, and so on.
Or you could look into Apart-hotels. These are apartments in a hotel which most
likely includes a kitchenette and a sitting room, plus the bedroom and bathroom.
It includes maid service, WiFi and other amenities.
Our Travel Housing page also has information on renting rooms with access to
kitchens and common areas, information on RV-ing, hostels, renting a room in a
shared household and more.
Once you get the hang of it, your "self-induced homelessness" can be great fun!
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best,
Akaisha
