Retire Early Lifestyle appeals to a different kind of person - the person who prizes their independence, values their time, and who doesn't want to mindlessly follow the crowd.

We recently took an early retirement "test drive" to Thailand. We've read your guide from cover to cover (figuratively speaking), and have spent many hours on your web site doing our research.

We spent 4 days in Chiang Mai and 4 days in Phuket. Chiang Mai is a great alternative to the chaos of Bangkok. It has a great laid-back feeling that is more representative of "true" Thailand. We stayed at the Thapae Gate Guest House, across the soi from Top North. The price was only $10 per night, and the staff was great. In Phuket, we stayed at Kata Sun Beach Hotel as you've recommended. It was everything you said it would be - clean rooms, friendly staff, excellent location, inexpensive. It is truly a superior value.

We're definitely now sold on early retirement, and will be making our preparations to early retire in less than a year. Thanks again for all your inspiration and helpful information. God Bless.

Thanksgiving is this week. It’s a day of not only giving thanks for all that we have received (despite any of our personal challenges), but also of remembering the many friendships we have been blessed with.

Real Investment Report
Lance Roberts

Bear Market Growl Grows Louder - Several months ago, I penned an article about the problems with “passive indexing” and specifically the problem of the “algorithms” that are driving roughly 80% of the trading in the markets. To wit: “When the ‘robot trading algorithms’  begin to reverse (selling rallies rather than buying dips), it will not be a slow and methodical process, but rather a stampede with little regard to price, valuation, or fundamental measures as the exit will become very narrow.”

Billy and Akaisha's - Three Lessons on Retirement
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

Retirement is a great achievement, but it's not static. It's not like once you arrive you can forget about it and put it on auto-pilot. It's an interactive manner of living that continues to respond to our input, the new skills we learn and how our goals modify. Hopefully we continue to grow and change, making our retirement sustainable and sweeter to live.

Are you feeling financially pinched with retirement just around the corner? According to a recent report from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), Americans are not saving enough with the mean savings for the ages between 32- 61 being about $96,000. I am sure you are doing better than this, but $96k is not that much to fund a retirement.

Update - Why We Took Social Security at Age 62
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

We decided to take Social Security at age 62. We know there are as many ways to consider this decision as there are days in a year. And many experts advise against taking social security “early” so that you get a bigger check at full retirement age. It is hard to argue against that. We have always lived an unconventional lifestyle and the fact that so many experts agree on waiting for payment gives us pause for thought. Here is our logic.

Livin’ Large, Spending Little
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

A swimming pool, hot tub, tennis courts, exercise room, immaculate gardens, Wifi internet connection, all for less than most homeowners pay in property taxes annually. The days of the 1945 Lafite Rothschilds are gone as well as the ‘72 Heitzes, but we are thankful for those extraordinary memories. We drank more than our share of fine wines when we owned our restaurant.

Money Isn't What Makes You Rich
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

It's a profound lesson. Some of the best financial minds in the business cannot predict volatile market swings. Many have seen their retirement savings go up and down like a roller coaster the past few weeks.

The Biggest Risks Of...- The 4 Percent Retirement Rule
Andrew Hallam

Billy Kaderli separated a delicious–looking piece of cheesecake with his fork. That’s when he turned to me and smiled. “A financial reporter recently interviewed me,” he said. “I explained that we live off the proceeds of our investment portfolio. She was surprised when I told her we have more money now than we did when we first retired.”

Merida, Yucatan, Mexico
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

We left Valladolid for Merida by taking an ADO 2nd class bus. Eighty-two Pesos per person bought us tickets and we arrived in Merida 3.5 hours later. Merida is considered the cultural capital of the entire Yucatan Peninsula. European travelers come here looking for something different than the hub-bub of resort towns.
