Retire Early Lifestyle is a content based website that appeals to a different kind of person - the person who prizes their independence, values their time, and who doesn't want to mindlessly follow the crowd.

I have followed your site for years and continue to learn. Unfortunately, I didn't start as young as you did. Perhaps I would have had the information been out there. At 62 I bought a one-way ticket to Saigon as a single woman. I took a CELTA course (1 month) and was offered my choice of 2 jobs teaching English. I taught in a Vietnamese beachside community called Vung Tau. I loved it. But after 1-1/2 year I wanted to try something else. I applied to teach in Mandalay, Myanmar and was accepted. I stayed there 2 years and then moved to Cairo, Egypt where I'm celebrating my 4th year. I teach 180 days a year, get an allowance for my apartment, and a paid trip back to the US annually (or any place else I choose). I love the expat life, meeting new people, and exploring new places.

Early Retirement as a Lifestyle
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

You can retire early to spend free time as you want; travel, study and learn, play sports, pursue a hobby… We did! In 1991, at the age of 38, we left our fast track lives, packed it up, sold everything, and moved to Nevis, a 36 sq. mile island in the Caribbean. From there we started traveling and haven’t looked back. Are we living the life YOU want right now? Is this idea appealing? Where to start?

Tepatitlan de Morelos
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

It's called "Tepa" for short. This clean, friendly city in the northern highlands of Mexico's state of Jalisco has a beautiful Baroque-style Cathedral, a gazebo of wrought iron made in France then transported to Mexico, and some fun rooftop restaurants and bars. Take a look!

Real Investment Report
Lance Roberts

The Fed Is On Deck All the bulls need now is the Fed to “cut” rates at the meeting next week.  It is expected the Fed will cut rates by 0.25% at the next meeting. However, what will be important is how they couch their views going forward.  The problem for the Fed is two fold.   If they come out too “dovish,” they will appear to be “caving” to Trump’s demands which would threaten their “independence.”  If they come out too “hawkish,” they run the risk of disappointing the markets, and already weaker consumer confidence.  The Fed is in really a tough spot. Given they have already cut rates once this year, they have already depleted what little bit of “ammunition” they have to combat the next recessionary downturn in the economy.

Retirement Plan in Tatters
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

It wasn't that long ago that we read a New York Times article by Joe Nocera called My Faith-Based Retirement. It was a cheerless piece detailing the failure of 401k’s as an investment vehicle, the decline of pensions, the lack of employer-sponsored healthcare benefit plans and the consequent reduction of Boomer’s retirement expectations.

Financial Independence: Going from Satisfaction to Satisfaction
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

As more and more Boomers retire, articles on the topic proliferate in the news and online media. One such recent article in the New York Times by Joanne Kaufman titled, Is Early Retirement Great? For Some, It's Hard Work to Have Fun presented some surprising challenges and questions. The ones that struck me the most are listed below, and I've given a different - and hopefully more uplifting - perspective on the conundrum that some people face.

How Do You Know You Are Wealthy?
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

What is wealth? In 1988, when we were first contemplating leaving the traditional working world and replace it with a life of travel, wealth was described only in terms of having money and possessions. Our decision to create a lifestyle of our choice was met with controversy. Some friends and family disapproved, while others became angry or confused.

Interview with Early Retirees Kevin & Valerie Cooper
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

One sunny afternoon in Chapala, Mexico, I was sipping coffee, relaxing on a bench overlooking the Lake and letting my mind drift when a couple walks past me. Noticing my stylish Retire Early Lifestyle Tee shirt, they turn around and introduce themselves to me as Kevin and Valerie Cooper. They made a point to tell me that they purchased our Chapala Guide and said they found it helpful. I had more questions than we had time for as Kevin and Valerie were exploring Chapala, and had plans for moving on to Morelia in the morning.

An Interview with Brian Watkins
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

Hi, as of 14 months ago I quit my job as a teacher, a position I held for 22 years, and at 48 decided to travel and enjoy a different lifestyle. I wanted a life with more freedom and less obligation to debt. I had spent a lifetime accepting that debt was part of the American lifestyle and just wanted something different.

Update -Why We Took Social Security at Age 62
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

We decided to take Social Security at age 62. We know there are as many ways to consider this decision as there are days in a year. And many experts advise against taking social security “early” so that you get a bigger check at full retirement age. It is hard to argue against that.
