Chiang Mai Flood, 2005
Thailand
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
The
River Ping is on the rise. I decided to go in.
Risking my life, I waded
through thigh high, yucky, mucky, snake-infested water.
Sand bags are holding so far
but later,
the businesses were not so lucky.
Team work brings in generators
to power pumps.
Night Market stalls float
down the street.
The water was rapidly rising
and the current was swift. Yet there were many smiles.
There were those who had places to get
to. Then I heard about the snakes!
This man made many trips
across the flooded road with people in his water taxi.
Industrious monks secure the Temple. They're not worried about snakes!
The swollen Mae Ping River.
The locals got around any way they
could. (And so did the snakes, but I'm not worried about them...)
Holding on for the ride.
Time to bring in the pump!
The morning after.
The Military comes in to take charge.
A bird's eye view of flooded
Chiang Mai.
