Power of Words – How Language Generates Your World

Keeping on the same theme of how important language is to our experience, this TED talk with Chalmers Brothers is one of the best I have heard in a long time.

He is to the point, engaging, accessible, and CLEAR in his explanations of how we speak ourselves into the world. We are creating all the time, whether we know it or not. Worth a listen.

Open to a useful perspective!

Cool Things to Do in Ybor City, Tampa

Martin William

Ybor City is a “city within a city” in Tampa, Florida. As soon as you enter this vibrant neighborhood, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Cuba.

In the daytime, it’s a place for lounging on outdoor patios sipping coffee and smoking cigars. In the evening, it’s a lively playground – so bring your dancing shoes!

The Story of Ybor City

In the 1880s, cigar manufacturer Vicente Martinez-Ybor founded Ybor City as an independent town.

Along with a few other cigar companies, the industry employed thousands of well-paid workers. Tampa grew over the next 20 years from a small and economically depressed town to a bustling, thriving city.

Ybor City was a unique place in the American South when it was first founded – a successful neighborhood almost entirely populated and owned by immigrants. The original population were the Spanish and Cuban immigrants who worked in the cigar factories. Eastern-European Jewish and Italian immigrants followed shortly afterward and established retail shops, print shops and much more.

The city began to decline in the 1930s when the Great Depression reduced the demand for fine cigars. It didn’t begin to recover again until the 1980s, when it became a bohemian haven for artists and a popular nightlife district.

These days, Ybor City has been revitalised and is a beautiful area of Tampa – full of character, life and history. It’s a must-see during your stay in Tampa vacation rentals.

What to Do in Ybor City

Here are just a few of the great things you’ll discover when you explore Ybor City.

Visit the Ybor City Museum

Delve deep into the history of this fascinating part of Tampa at the Ybor City Museum. For only $4 admission you can learn about cigar magnate Don Vicente Martinez and the early dates of Ybor City. The museum is located within the 1920s era Ferlita Bakery building.

You can also relax in the shade of the lush Mediterranean-style garden and see a reproduction of a ‘casita’ – the typical home for a cigar worker.

Grab a Snack at La Segunda

This bakery has been operating since 1915 and is the largest producer of authentic Cuban break in the world. It was originally opened by Juan More, a Spaniard who fought in the Spanish-American War in Cuba.

Juan passed down his recipe to his descendants, who have been running the bakery ever since. They still use the same recipe and techniques as they did over 100 years ago. It’s one of the only remaining places where Cuban bread is made the traditional way, split down the middle with freshly-cut palmetto leaves.

Check Out the Wild Chickens

Did you know that Ybor City has a population of wild chickens and roosters? They are the direct descendants of the chickens that once lived in the backyards of the residents of the neighborhood, over 100 years ago.

These chickens are protected by a city ordinance – which technically makes the city of Tampa a bird sanctuary. You can find the proud roosters strutting and hens clucking all over town. (And, of course, they have their own Instagram page!)

If you want to support these birds, you can donate to the Ybor Chickens Society. This non-profit protects the chickens and enlists volunteers to scrub away the bird poo from porches of local businesses.

Have Lunch at Columbia Restaurant

This stunning restaurant is the oldest in Florida – as well as the oldest and largest Spanish restaurant in the USA. It was originally founded in 1905 by a Cuban immigrant named Casimiro Hernandez Sr. and it is still owned by his descendants.

Not only is the history quite amazing, the food is truly superb. The dishes are fresh and prepared table-side. Columbia Restaurant should definitely be on your list.

Take a Cigar Factory Tour

Since cigars are such an important part of Ybor City history, taking a cigar factory tour is absolutely a must during your visit. Tabanero Cigars offers a 45 minute tour that will show you the complete process of cigar-making, from raw leaves to the finished product.

You’ll get a chance to go into the walk-in humidor and learn about the aging process. With your tour you’ll also receive a complimentary cup of Cuban coffee. The tours take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm and they cost $15 per person.

Catch Some Live Music

When the sun goes down, the streets of Ybor City come to life with music and dancing. So, take the chance to kick up your heels and dance the night away during your stay.

When it comes to bigger-name acts, you can check out the Orpheum – which has been showcasing great bands for almost two decades. It’s located right in the heart of the entertainment district and has also hosted dance competitions, charity fundraisers and more.

The Ritz Ybor is also a great place to go if you’re in the mood for live music. It has been around since 2008 and it’s one of the best special event and concert venues in Tampa. It features music from some of the local entertainment scene’s top acts.

Why Not Explore Ybor City?

These are just a few of the great things you can see and do when you explore the unique Ybor City district of Tampa. So, get out there and enjoy!

One of the classic mobility aids is the electric wheelchair. In this blog post, we are going to take a look at the benefits of electric wheelchairs in relation to reducing the fall risk. So, continue reading to discover everything you need to know…

  1. You’re more secure in a wheelchair – A wheelchair is much steadier and it can handle different terrains, and this reason alone will lower the fall risk considerably. However, there are still risks associated with wheelchairs, although they are fewer. Still, it is important to be aware of some of the different things that you should do in order to reduce the chances of experiencing a fall while in your wheelchair. This involves avoiding sliding or positioning yourself too far forward in your seat. You also need to make sure that you do not overreach for an object. Plus, make sure you lock the breaks before you get out of the wheelchair, move the footrests out of the way so that you do not trip on them while transferring, and do not lean forward, as you could tip your wheelchair over.
  2. Access to higher levels – Wheelchairs today come with a whole host of useful features. Seat elevation is one of these. This useful feature means you can reach higher levels. There is a much greater chance of you being able to grab something you need with ease if your wheelchair can elevate. Trying to reach something without this sort of aid could easily result in a fall and injury.
  3. More stable than a manual wheelchair – he fact that the wheelchair is electronic also makes a massive difference. With a manual wheelchair, you need to make sure you can move around. If you get stuck on a difficult part of the road, you may find yourself moving about more to try and get the wheelchair to move, and this could easily result in a fall injury. This is something you do not need to worry about if you go down the electric route.  As you can see, there are many different benefits that are associated with using an electric wheelchair. There has been research that has shown that the risk of falling and injuring yourself is going to be a lot lower if you use an electric wheelchair. Nevertheless, you still need to make an effort to ensure you use the wheelchair properly, so do not ignore the tips that have been provided.

What are you guys doing for health insurance?

Q&A with a Reader

My husband and I were listening to the Mad Fientist podcast and enjoyed your story.

We are in the process of planning our early retirement. Our retirement date is Jan 2025.  We plan on selling everything and traveling the world, indefinitely.  The plan is to live in various countries for about 1-3 months at a time.

I have been doing a lot of research regarding Worldwide Health Insurance and was curious what you guys were doing.

Both my husband and I are healthy and we will be 50 in 2025. We would appreciate any insight that you may have.

Thank you,

Hi Anna,

Thank you for taking the time to write, and Congratulations on your upcoming retirement!

When we first left the working world in 1991, it was inconceivable to us to live without health insurance. We always had it in one form or another either employer sponsored, or when we were self-employed, we purchased our  own policy.

When we retired, we did Cobra for a while, then we continued our own high deductible US-based health insurance policy for a long time — maybe a decade or more. Since we were world travelers (we were called perpetual travelers at that time) we seemed to always find ourselves in another country when we needed service (emergencies, stitches, colonoscopy, executive physicals, eye exams, MRIs, annual check ups, x-rays, dental work, new glasses, etc.).

At some point, we decided that instead of spending thousands of dollars a year for an insurance policy we weren’t using, we’d bank that money (like our own HSA account) and pull from it whenever we needed it.

This has worked great for us.

We now qualify for medicare so that is our back up emergency plan. When we visit the States we have medicare – but before that we took out a traveler’s health insurance policy and that is what worked for us.

We continue to utilize Medical Tourism wherever we go, and instead of paying for a policy that medi-vacs us back to the States, we simply get local service.

This works in most places unless you are traveling off the grid for a length of time. A temporary policy might be best at that time to get you where you want to go.

A couple of things — You might want to take a look at our Health Insurance Page, our Medical Tourism Page and read the following few articles which explain in depth what our position is — or what has worked for us.

We realize that health care is a very personal matter and everyone must choose for themselves what they feel comfortable with. I wanted to also mention, that Billy and  I do alternative care often (acupuncture, massage, homeopathy, yoga, TENS unit, juicing, supplements, etc.) and our health policy did not cover anything of this sort.

That being said, when I almost lost my finger, of course I utilized Western care, and the same with Billy here. We paid out of pocket each time. Costs are listed on the previous linked articles.

Let us know if you have any other questions… Thanks for writing and the articles I recommend to you are below.

Sending our best regards, and again, Congratulations!

Akaisha and Billy

Ways How Home Care Can Help You In Retirement

Mitzie Weech

Home care allows caretakers to come to your home to provide extra assistance to senior citizens. It’s an alternate option for elderlies to stay at a facility for said care. The caretakers offer a broad range of healthcare services for people who find it challenging to perform daily tasks.

Since most people dislike staying in healthcare facilities, they opt to have home care services instead. Here are five ways home care can help you during your retirement:

  1. Comfort

You don’t have to leave the house to receive proper care during your senior years. Reliable home care professionals travel to your home to give you the comfort and support you need. Thus, you can sleep in your bed, use your bathroom, and sit on your favorite couch while receiving proper care.

Being in a familiar environment might be beneficial for senior citizens. Elderly individuals who suffer from progressive conditions like dementia might find it difficult to adjust to new situations.

A trustworthy home care provider knows the needs of the various patients in their supervision. Different seniors will have varying needs, and your home care aide can help you achieve multiple daily tasks.

  1. Makes the Home a Better Place to Live

Specific elderly individuals might have difficulties in moving around the house. Standing and walking may become challenging. Also, small steps might cause accidents.

A home care expert can help you in adjusting the layout of your home’s décor to make it a better place to live. Seemingly simple tasks like moving a slippery rug or rearranging pieces of furniture may be ideal if left to the capable hands of the caretaker.

The aide can also help you with other everyday tasks like sitting, standing, or lying down. Moving specific body parts may become more challenging as you continue to age. Reliable home care personnel know the immediate importance of caring for their sick and elderlies. So, you can be at peace, knowing these trustworthy people will always be by your side when you need them.

  1. Companionship

As previously mentioned, dependable home care staff will be with you when you need physical, mental, or emotional assistance. Don’t disregard the importance of your emotional well-being as you grow older. Companionship might become a luxury sought by many.

Think about the following scenario – you might be alone in your home during your senior years. Now, your children are all grown up while you stay at home alone. You have nothing else to do but reminisce about the good times that happened in the past.

A caretaker can give you the companionship you need during the times you feel left out. The home care expert will listen to your stories, and they can also answer with tales of their own.

Take note that being alone might lead to specific mental ailments like anxiety and depression. Having a reliable companion nearby will help you keep your mental well-being in check.

  1. Safety In and Outside the House

Perhaps, there might be a point in your life when you have to give up your car keys. Driving may become a more hazardous endeavor than before. Maneuvering your automobile in traffic might be too challenging because of declining physical and mental functions.

Instead, consider giving the car keys to your caretaker. The home care professional will help you travel when needed. These tasks may include buying groceries, visiting friends, or attending church.

Also, if you find it too difficult to walk to your vehicle, the caretaker may do the tasks you require. So, instead of driving your car and tending to the chores you need to do, you can let the caretaker do it for you.

These chores might include (but not limited to):

  • Buying food for lunch and dinner
  • Getting documents from the doctor’s office
  • Attending social events in your place
  • Walking your dog
  1. Access to Proper Diet and Nutrition

Skilled home care services should know your daily nutrition requirements. Thus, the caretaker in your home will prepare meals and snacks that fit your dietary needs.

Many adults in their senior years may be at a higher risk of acquiring nutrient deficiencies. The lack of vitamins and minerals may lead to contracting illnesses and injuries.

With the right home care service provider, you can enjoy tasty food and beverages without leaving your health needs behind.

Support for Independent Living

Consider home care even before you start your senior years. The help you gain from the assistance of reliable caretakers will bring various benefits to enhance your quality of life. At-home care may offer you the extra mile you need regarding personal attention during your retirement.

How Can Senior Citizens benefit from Smartphones?

Martin William

Elders are not always tech-savvy. They may not into the latest advancements and technological inventions, but they can benefit from these tech advancements a lot. In this regard, smartphones have much more to offer them than just having a video chat. Below in this article, we’ve mentioned some of the most amazing benefits that these smart devices have to offer to your elder parents. If you are interested in knowing how smart devices are associated with their health and entertainment, then keep on reading!

A larger Screen

Smaller and old flip phones have a tiny screen with a keypad that has several alphabets on it, which makes it easier for older people to use them easily. Moreover, for their weak eyesight, it becomes a hindrance for them to use phones which have smaller keys.

Conversely, smartphones tend to have a much larger screen as compared to old flip phones, which makes the usage of the phone much easier for them. Additionally, they have all the freedom to adjust the size of the text according to their preference and can also zoom in and out the screen if they want to.

Voice Capabilities

It can be very challenging for a person who has arthritis to type a text message. Even though typing a message on a smartphone is much easier than pressing hard keys like we used to with our old phones, many people still cannot type a text on them. Smartphone manufacturers have got them covered! The voice commands and talk-to-text features have made it easier for older citizens to send a text message without even typing it plus they can have their phone to read the response for them aloud as well. All they need to do is to command digital personalities like Siri to assist them.

They can even pose a request ‘Hey Siri, set my alarm for 5 am’ or ‘Hey Siri, remind me to have my meal at  1 pm.’ For elders who don’t want to use a smartphone or don’t have such issues of texting with fingers can buy also buy phones that are specifically made for them. If you are hunting for a phone for your mother, grandmother, or anyone, then you can check out the best cell phone for seniors that don’t even need to be maintained like smartphones.

Fitness Tracking

Fitness and wellness is probably the main concern of aged people. They try to eat healthily and do activities that can keep them active and fresh. In this regard, smartphones have proven to be extremely beneficial for older citizens. We all are aware of amazing and exciting features these phones come with, and fitness tracking applications are one of them. These applications allow them to keep a tab on their health. For example, these apps can tell them how many steps they’ve walked, how many stairs they climbed, and how many meters they’ve run.

With the advancement in technology, manufacturers are coming up with phones that can even sync up with a wearable fitness tracker allowing seniors to monitor their heart or pulse rate in depth. These features have allowed them to track their fitness regularly and how much they’ve improved.

After retirement, the senior’s life can be very boring especially when they have no source to keep them entertained and busy. Thanks to smartphones and the amazing features they have, the life of older citizens is not that dull and boring anymore. Smartphones are a perfect gadget for fighting boredom. Now they can play video games, listen to audiobooks, and can surf the internet whenever they want.

Audiobooks come very handily, especially for those senior citizens who have major eyesight problems, as they can listen to any book they want anytime. While talking about entertainment, how can we forget about social media? They can also use social media to stay connected with their old mates and can see photos and videos, their friends and family share on such platforms. Every possible entertainment is just a click away for them.

Peace of Mind

This one is more like a benefit for you. As our parents get older, we begin to worry about them more than ever. It becomes our responsibility to keep a check on them, and to make sure they are fine. You must be wondering what the smartphone has to do with my peace of mind?

Well, knowing that you can call your parents anytime is not just enough. You also need to be sure that they are not getting bored when you leave them on their own. You’ll be worry-free knowing that they are keeping tabs on their health. Lastly, you can always have a video chat with them if you live a bit far from them. It will not only keep you out of worry but will give them the peace of mind too.

What Is the Importance of Home Care when Retiring

Sarah Morris

As you age, your bodily functions will also start to deteriorate. You won’t have the same vigor when you were a teen, making it challenging for you to accomplish tasks as a senior. Fortunately, services are now available for retirees to live with ease—and home care is just one of them.

Home care is a service that helps retirees and people with special needs to stay at home as trained healthcare professionals assist them. A private care provider will assist their patients in their medical treatments, as well as help them with their daily activities. These professionals can offer personal care, cooking, and homemaking to their elderly or ill patients.

Homecare is important when you’re retiring because of the following reasons:

  1. Diet and Nutrition

A lot of things will change in your body as you age. Aside from decreasing energy levels, you will also have different nutritional requirements. A well-balanced diet can keep your weight in check and boost your immune system, allowing you to fight illnesses and diseases.

For retirees to enjoy these benefits, one must pay attention to the food they consume. It should contain the nutrients their body needs and should have a minimum amount of carbohydrates, not to mention the medical conditions and allergies that need to be considered in meal preparations as well.

A private care provider will prepare your meals when you pay for home care services. Since this provider is a trained healthcare professional, they can prepare meals suitable for your dietary requirements. They can even provide nutritional counseling to ensure that you won’t experience malnutrition as you age.

  1. Medical Treatment Needs

To make up for the natural aging process, medications will be given to retirees. They will be given prescriptions to maintain their overall health, and will be prescribed more medical treatments if they were recently hospitalized.

As a retiree, it’ll be hard for you to keep track of your medical needs by yourself, especially if you have many. Can you take two medications at the same time? What time should you take these treatments? Are there any dos and don’ts after taking a specific medication?

Home care services can provide accurate answers to all of these questions. With a private care provider, you can be sure that you’re taking the right medication at the right time. A private care provider can also give accurate tips on what food and drinks are prohibited when you’re under medication.

With home care services, it’ll be very easy to ward off any health conditions and boost the effectiveness of your medications. This professional service can expedite the process of your recovery from any medical conditions, as well.

  1. Safety

Sure, you might still live in your home even as a retiree, but will you be safe when you live alone? Can you still manage to avoid slip and fall accidents? Can you still see clearly to notice any wet, slippery, and uneven surfaces?

Three million seniors suffer from slip and fall accidents every year. Depending on the severity, these accidents can have physical consequences to retirees and even cause death. Steer away from this direction by choosing to live with a private care provider from a home care service.

A private home care provider can enhance your mobility in and around your house as they can provide assistance when you walk. They can also keep your path safe from any obstructions such as rugs and unlevel surfaces. A private home care provider can become your eyes so you can move around safely.

  1. Improved Relationships

Aside from home care services, retirees can opt to live in a nursing home. This facility provides long-term care for the elderly or disabled. However, this living arrangement can put a strain on relationships, especially if the facility is far from their family’s locations.

Although nursing homes allow visitations, distance can become the reason why family members can’t visit their senior loved ones as often as they want to, thus resulting in a gap in the relationship.

Because home care services won’t require the retiree to live elsewhere, this arrangement still allows you to maintain, strengthen, and even create relationships. It’ll be easy and convenient for your family members to visit you since you’ll be staying in your own house.

A private care provider can also drive you to your family’s house whenever you want to. This service alone can ensure your attendance during weekend BBQs and other annual celebrations!

Make Sound Decisions

More and more people require home care services, which is why there are now several businesses that offer this service. When choosing a provider, get recommendations, compare options, and know their scope of services. Only choose a home care provider that offers the services you need, so you can fully enjoy your life as a retiree!

Tips for having the appropriate watches

Anna Jonson

How well it functions

You may not know it, but for each event there is a correct watch. Gone are the days when a watch could be worn with just anything. On the off chance that you need to keep an upscale look, you have to comprehend what watches work, and which do not. Fortunately for you, we’re here to help.

Today we will talk about when certain watches are fitting and how to adapt them with your garments. I have found the superior quality watches at https://www.watchshopping.com/.

What number of watches do you have?

Probably one. In the event that you fit in with the vast majority, you are wearing a similar watch every day, pondering what it looks like with your dress or  your work out outfit.

Day by day watch trend technology

Each lady has her preferred pair of earring studs, and each man has a couple of cuff links that he enjoys the most. On the off chance that you work in an office, a basic, yet a la mode Cassio Version watch will make you the talk at the water cooler.

Match metal to metal

This might sound too blunt, but you will be astounded at the number of men who attempt to wear gold face watches with silver cuff links or tie clasps, or what number of ladies wear silver face watches together with their gold hoops. It simply doesn’t work. This makes you look messy. Match the metal of your watch with your other jewelry to make your outfit look immaculate and trendy.

Coordinating Shading

Casio’s splendid pink BBG watch may keep you grinning throughout the day, yet it won’t wear well when you’re wearing bright colors. A general guideline for men is to consistently match your watch band to your shoes and belt. Ladies can pull off being excessively daring, yet remember that the shade of your watch ought to consistently compliment your dress. It should not stand out on its own.

Outside Watches are to be worn outside

There is nothing more terrible than a man in a decent suit with an open air watch. These watches are intended for outdoor or sport use. They are commonly waterproof, ready to withstand weather, and can perform. In the event that you work in an office, wearing ana outdoor watch can truly destroy your in-vogue style, so leave this watch at home and go for a dress watch instead.

A Standard watch consistently implies style

Consider having formal wear watches. When you are dressed officially, it is important that men wear a watch that is masculine yet intricate. A Casio version or a period piece can give your wrist and suit a coherent look. Pick a watch with great lines and strong, differentiating shades like silver and dark. For ladies, a little and delightfully planned Casio or Timex dress watch, with only a trace of pastel shading on the face, is the ideal answer for practically any outfit.
