The Rock
Restaurant
Boquete, Panama
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
"Everyone" was talking
about The Rock Restaurant, so we simply had to go and find out for ourselves.
We tend to enjoy our
largest meal at lunch time, so we took a little walk from our hotel in
Boquete town, up
the hill to this locally famous dining establishment. The walk was much longer
than either of us thought it would be, but at least the weather was fresh and cool. We
decided right then to take it easy after lunch and hire a taxi back home.
Entrance sign
We anticipated a delicious meal
and were looking forward to the experience.
The Rock restaurant with the
ever-present hillsides behind it
The restaurant
was attractive and had views available to diners from windows all around. The
colorful gardens were beautiful and beckoned us.
Indoor and outdoor
eating areas
As we walked into the
spacious dining area, we decided to sit outside in the garden section which was
completely open air.
We imagined this place to
look so lovely in evening light with the fireplace lit. It was easy to envision
diners quietly chatting away in the softened light, drinking wine and enjoying
each other's company.
The appetizer menu
The appetizer menu was
appealing and it took a while to decide what we might want to try out for our
lunch. All prices are in US Dollars.
Dinner menu
Even though we eat our
large meal midday, these portions seemed big to us. We might have been able to
share a meal and an appetizer together, but instead, we chose something lighter
for each of us.
Fresh strawberry
lemonade
This drink was scrumptious.
Fresh, tangy and thirst quenching, my strawberry lemonade hit the spot.
Hot bread and olive oil
First to arrive was a bread
board with hot sourdough bread and olive oil for dipping.
A little balsamic
vinegar was the right touch
The waiter asked us if we
would like some balsamic vinegar for our olive oil dip and we eagerly agreed. We
added some salt and pepper to the mix, and it was just right.
The Bouillabaisse
Billy ordered the
Bouillabaisse and the flavor was remarkable.
The presentation was simple
and perfect.
Crispy
fish tacos wrapped in soft tortillas
My crispy
fish tacos were also wonderful, but I felt the plate needed some color. White on
white isn't always appealing to the eyes, so I figured some garnish of red bell
pepper (grilled would have been lovely!) and maybe a slice of lime.
Lime often
brings out the best flavor in fish, so I took the one off my strawberry lemonade
and squirted the tacos with that.
Yes! It was
the right touch.
Wanting some
greens after eating his Bouilliabasse, Billy ordered a mixed salad and we shared
it.
Our bill
Here you see our itemized
bill. Notice the Jubilado discount, then tax. We added extra for the tip.
Activity board
Monday is Jazz Night, and
that sounded like an excellent idea. The Thursday All You Can Eat Rib Night is
famous around town.
YUM!
Walking out the door
The meal was delicious, we
were gratified, and the atmosphere was pleasant.
I asked the waiter to call
us a cab to take us home. There is $1USD charge for the restaurant to call a
cab, and the ride itself back to our hotel was $2.
Cabs around town and to
locations several miles away usually ran about $0.60 to $0.75, so we figured we
were charged a bit extra because we were eating at The Rock upscale restaurant.
If you can afford to eat here, so the thinking goes, you can pay extra for the
cab home!
If you visit Boquete,
Panama, make it a point to come here for a meal.
