Retirement; like your parents, but way cooler

financially independent lifestyle, they invite you

Hotel
Posada la Basilica
Patzcuaro, Michoacan,
Mexico
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
Not far from the bustling Colonial City of
Morelia,
is a town with a completely different flavor.
Patzcuaro has kept its indigenous roots, and the written history of this
town goes back to the 1300s.
Walking around the streets of Patzcuaro,
which looks like someplace out of Portugal or France's countryside, we
discovered an hotel and restaurant with a panoramic view.

Sign on the outside of this old 18th
Century house
Notice the old mud bricks of this ancient
building, and the tattered wooden divider in the center.
Built in the 18th
century, this hotel and restaurant has modernized somewhat with Wi-Fi, Cable
TV and hardwood floors. Some rooms offer balconies and claw foot bath tubs
with a view out onto the town.

TEKARE, the family-style restaurant at
the top of the building.
We wanted to see the
advertised view that the restaurant offered, so we walked up some narrow
circular stairs which brought us here.
Tiled rooftops met our
gaze and further out you can see the lake with a couple of islands in the
middle.
The restaurant is open
breakfast, lunch and dinner, and you can order coffee, alcoholic drinks or
an ice cold beer.

A nice, cold Corona Extra with lime
I ordered an agua fresca and Billy
had his beer. We dreamed outside the window, witnessing the heat and
listening to the
breeze and the birds.
As we enter these old Colonial buildings, I always wonder about the people and the
lives which came before. I think
about their concerns, what excited them about life, and what they spoke
about with their neighbors.
Historically, what was going on? What
were their fears and what did they dream for their future?

A fairly clear day - blue skies
against red tile roofs
As is the custom in these ancient towns,
people's houses will often share a wall. Red tile roofs are the norm,
creating a cooler interior for the homes. The simple domiciles are often
either mud brick, gray concrete block or whitewashed over both.

The basilica is on the left almost
outside the photo
You can see the
Santuario de Guadalupe Basilica just to
the left in the photo. When Sunday Mass is beginning, the bells can be heard
all over town.
Right in the center front of this photo
is a classical style of building. The extended roof - which creates shade
underneath - is held up by pillars. The opening seems a little skinny here, but
usually there is a courtyard and maybe a garden interior.

Patzcuaro Lake and Isla de Janitzio
There are boat tours around the lake and
to the six islands located there. These tours are very popular.

Parroquia del Santuario de Guadalupe
Here is a closer view of the Santuario de
Guadalupe, built at the beginning of the 19th century.

Outdoor seating of the restaurant
This restaurant / hotel is an enchanting
place to stay overnight, or to enjoy a drink or meal.
We found it to be very
quiet (except when the church bells chimed - but welcome to Mexico!) and you
could just drift away in the pleasant breeze.
If you are in Paztcuaro, enjoy a beverage
or meal here. Take advantage of the tranquility!
