Puebla Cathedral

This photo was taken from our hotel rooftop. What a great view!

In the bottom right of this picture is the Skybar, Attico 303 where we had a lovely meal the first night we arrived.

While construction on this Cathedral began in 1575, it wasn't usable until 1690. Overall, it took about 200 years to complete.

Looking at the front of the Basilica it's amazing to remember that in 1862, there was a huge battle here called The Battle of Puebla. The French tried to establish themselves here in Mexico because of Europe's interest in the silver mines, but the local Mexicans would have none of it.

The interior of the Church

Beautiful Corinthian columns and railings are inside this church. The ceiling is painted bright white with murals and this lightens up what would have been a darker interior.

In all, there are 14 side chapels.

This Cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary and is one of the oldest in Mexico.

The Church at night

The photo is taken from the Plaza with the beautiful fountain also lit up.

In the early days, this fountain was the source of water for the town.

Here is a better look at the columns, the railings and the domes overhead.

Stations of the Cross line the wall

Beautiful wrought iron doors and gates are on the side of the main church.

For a stone interior, it looks deceptively light and airy.

This Cathedral has two towers, but only one of them has bells.

Legend says that there is a creek or small river running under the other tower, and the vibration of bells ringing would collapse it.
