One of the great things today about world travelers and the internet
combined, is that it's easy to find
restaurants,
cafes, markets,
rooftop
bars, and various places for
sight-seeing.
All one has to do is put your parameters
in the search box and voila!
You'll have the place
on a map, the address and hours of operation, and even perhaps a menu.
Mila Postres was advertised as a very
popular breakfast place with pastries to die for.
Ok.
We're in!
The logo of Mila Postres
Camila Vargas, known as Mila, is one of
the most successful and renowned pastry chefs in the Caribbean Region.
Originally from Colombia's capitol city
of Bogota, Mila went to college and studied business administration.
However, her first love was cooking. So after graduation she went to chef
school in Bogota, then studied pastry and baking in Argentina.
This determined, yet patient woman was
then recruited to work for hotels in
Boca
Grande, where the rich and famous come to stay while visiting Colombia.
Very popular Mila Postres
Inside Mila Postres are quaint tables and
chairs. A mural is on the wall to the left. Waitresses are in uniform
wearing the native hats of the Palenqueras.
Palenqueras are the direct descendants of
the world's first free African slaves who live in San Basilio de Palenque.
Pastry case inside Mila Postres
Open daily for breakfast, lunch and
dinner, one can also have coffee with a pastry, or a glass of wine with a
sandwich.
Here you see the display case with
amazing pies, cakes, brownies and other sweets.
Beautiful pies, cakes and brownies on
display
Take a look at this lineup of sweets.
Isn't it mind-boggling?
Shrimp Ceviche with cream
Yes, of course we were going to try one
of those babies, but first we decided to have lunch.
One of the things we enjoy is to order
items off the menu and share them.
This is the Shrimp Ceviche with cream,
red onions, corn and green beans. Fried plantain chips are on the side and
made a nice crunchy contrast.
Mila's special sandwich
Billy and I also shared
Mila's special sandwich, roast chicken, melted cheese, fresh tomato and
avocado on a baguette. Again, fried plantain chips on the side for the added
crunch.
Brownie with butterscotch dollops
Since there were several styles of
brownies I would guess that some were different than dark chocolate.
It seems that one of Mila's signatures is
"dollops". I can only guess that these are butterscotch because there was no
listing or names of each pastry offering in the case.
Chocolate brownie with edible gold
dollops
This one had my curiosity. I hate to
admit it, but I have never had edible gold, and would have liked to try it
out.
Instead, we shared a Ganache de chocolate
brownie. I'll have to go back and taste this one on our next visit.
More dollops!
What a beautiful flan, with strawberry
syrup in the inner circle and fresh strawberries lining the outside.
I'm going to guess that the white is
meringue, since they are perfectly formed. It's possible that they could be
whipped cream...
In Latin countries, this egg custard is
called "Flan" but in France it is called Creme Caramel.
Our bill
All of our items are listed here on our
bill, including the tip.
We paid about $24USD.
Perhaps next time we'll try breakfast or
at least have a treat with coffee!
