MOONSHINE & MY BARBER CHIANG MAI, THAILAND Billy and Akaisha Kaderli |
|
Leaving tomorrow for Bangkok, then on to Australia, I decided to get my hair cut. Stopping at my usual barber's, he's just finishing a Thai man. He signals for me to get into the chair, and says "just a moment!" Looking through the mirror, I see him hand the other man a glass of whiskey. It's 10:30 a.m.! The barber says "Chinese whiskey. Good. I make... strong whiskey, you want?" I tell them it's a little early... I've had moonshine whiskey before on Nevis, a small island in the Caribbean. There it was sold in ketchup bottles, labeled "strong rum", and it was. I could only imagine how my barber was dealing this stuff. His steady hand produced a fine haircut, as the girls from the massage parlor across the soi alley, gave their approval.

Now, almost 11:00 a.m., I relented in trying a small glass. It's better to regret doing something, than to regret not doing it at all. Strong whiskey was correct, paint remover may have been a better label, and it smelled like a fermented fruit cake. Now that I'm lubed up, he asks if I want to buy a bottle for $1.50. How could I pass this up? The nasty looking Listerine container he came out with didn't impress me much, so I settled on a glass bottle. Bottom's up!.. Cheers, Billy |
